SumOfUs Petition Demands CEO Resign As Former WestJet Flight Attendant Files Lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court

BRITISH COLUMBIA — Lawyers for a former WestJet flight attendant filed a lawsuit in the B.C. Supreme Court after the corporation allegedly fired the flight attendant for reporting sexual assault by one of the airline’s pilots.   The lawsuit argues that WestJet consistently failed to provide employees with a safe workplace, and knew for years the pilot had assaulted another employee, and took no action.

Coinciding with the announcement of the lawsuit, SumOfUs.org, an international consumer watchdog with more than 650,000 members in Canada, launched a new petition campaign urging WestJet CEO Gregg Saretsky to resign his post.  The petition argues that Saretsky is unfit to lead WestJet due to his repeated failure to provide a workplace where claims of sexual assault and rape are adequately investigated and employees are protected.  The petition calls on the company to replace Saretsky and immediately update and enforce its policies regarding sexual harassment and assault, in order to adequately protect survivors and ensure criminals are prosecuted.

“Women shouldn’t face harassment of any kind at their respective workplaces and no one should fear for their job after reporting sexual assault by a fellow employee,” explained Emma Pullman, lead campaign strategist at SumOfUs. WestJet CEO Gregg Saretsky has not only failed to protect survivors of sexual assault, but under his leadership he has created an environment that punish survivors for reporting their abuse.  This is unacceptable. Saretsky must resign, and WestJet leadership must take immediate action to overhaul sexual harassment and assault prevention and reporting mechanisms immediately.”
